How to Test Wall Panel Samples: Soak, Burn, Bend
A free sample tells you what a panel looks like. It doesn't tell you whether the supplier's claims about water resistance, fire rating and core strength are real — until you actually test it. Three simple checks on a sample offcut catch most of the quality problems that only show up after a full container has landed: a soak test for water absorption, a burn test for fire rating, and a bend test for core density. None of them need a lab. All of them take under an hour, and any factory confident in its own product will tell you to go ahead and run them.
The Short Answer
- Soak test: submerge a sample 24–48 hours; a genuine PVC or SPC panel shows 0% water absorption — no swelling, no weight gain, no edge softening.
- Burn test: hold a flame to an offcut edge for a few seconds and remove it; a real B1-rated core self-extinguishes within seconds and doesn't drip burning material.
- Bend test: cantilever a 300 mm offcut from one end; a properly cored panel resists noticeably, while an underweight panel bows with almost no pressure.
- These tests screen out obviously misrepresented samples. They don't replace a third-party SGS or fire-classification report for customs or building-code compliance — treat them as a first filter, not a final signature.
What You Need
Request at least two sample pieces from any supplier you're seriously evaluating — one to keep intact for visual and surface comparison, one to cut up for testing. A single 300 mm × 300 mm offcut is enough for all three tests below. You'll also want a small container of water, a lighter or small torch, a kitchen scale accurate to 1 gram, and a well-ventilated space away from anything flammable for the burn test.
Test 1: The Soak Test (Water Resistance)
SPC and PVC wall panels are marketed on 0% water absorption, but that claim only holds for a properly extruded mineral-filled core — a wood-plastic composite cut with excess wood flour to save cost will absorb water and swell even with the same "waterproof panel" label on the box. Weigh the dry sample first, then fully submerge it in water for 24–48 hours. Weigh it again and inspect the edges and surface closely.
Pass: weight unchanged, no visible swelling, no soft spots at the cut edge, surface film unaffected. Fail: any measurable weight gain, edge puffing, or a spongy feel when you press the cut edge after soaking — all signs of a wood-fiber or low-density filler core that will fail in a real bathroom or kitchen splashback within a year or two.
Test 2: The Burn Test (Fire Rating)
A genuine B1 flame-retardant core, tested under China's GB 8624 standard, self-extinguishes within seconds once the flame source is removed — it doesn't need to keep burning to prove anything, and it shouldn't. Hold a lighter flame against a cut edge of the offcut for 3–5 seconds, then pull the flame away and watch what happens next.
Pass: the flame goes out on its own almost immediately, with limited smoke and no dripping. Fail: the panel keeps burning after the flame source is removed, drips flaming material, or produces heavy black smoke — this is the signature of a foam-core or unfilled PVC sheet sold under a B1 label it was never actually tested for. This test tells you whether the flame-retardant claim is plausible; it isn't a substitute for the certified fire classification report, which you should still request separately.
Test 3: The Bend Test (Core Density)
Cracking and flexing complaints almost always trace back to core density and thickness, not the material category itself — a properly cored 5 mm panel and an underweight 5 mm panel can look identical in a photo. Hold a 300 mm offcut horizontally, gripping one end so the rest cantilevers out unsupported, and note how much it sags under its own weight. Then press lightly on the top face with a fingertip near the far end.
Pass: the panel holds mostly flat with only slight sag, and resists finger pressure without an obvious hinge point. Fail: the panel bows noticeably under its own weight or flexes like a thin plastic sheet under light pressure — this is the panel that will crack at a seam or corner once it's on a wall and takes real-world knocks. Also check the click-lock edge with a fingernail: a shallow, soft profile is usually the first part of a cheap panel to fail during installation.

Honest Limitation: What This Doesn't Replace
These are screening tests, not laboratory tests. They're good enough to catch a supplier who is mislabeling a wood-plastic composite as waterproof, or a plain PVC sheet as B1-rated — the failures are usually obvious once you know what to look for. They are not a substitute for a current SGS test report or B1 fire classification certificate when you need documentation for customs clearance, a building permit, or a hotel chain's procurement compliance file.
