Fixing Common Wall Panel Installation Mistakes
Almost every "these panels turned out terrible" complaint we hear traces back to one of the same six installation mistakes, not a bad batch of panels. VIGOU Panels supplies full trim systems and installation training to distributor crews precisely because the product's failure rate has far more to do with technique than material — here's what actually goes wrong on real job sites, and the specific fix for each.
Mistake 1 — No Expansion Gap
Panels installed edge-to-edge with zero gap have nowhere to go as they expand with heat, so within weeks they push against each other and bow off the wall. Fix: leave a 2–3 mm gap between panels, opening it up to 4–5 mm in rooms with direct sun exposure or near heat sources like kitchen ranges. This is the single most common cause of the "bulging wall" complaint we see, and it's entirely preventable with a spacer offcut during fitting.
Mistake 2 — Skipping Acclimation
Panels straight from a cold warehouse or shipping container are in a genuinely different thermal state than the room they're about to be fixed in, and fitting them immediately produces one of two failures: seams that look tight on day one and pull apart days later, or seams with a reasonable gap that jam and buckle upward as the panel warms to room temperature. Fix: store panels flat in the installation room for 24–48 hours before fitting — 48 in cold climates or when panels arrive straight off a container.
Mistake 3 — Misaligned First Panel
Every panel after the first one copies its alignment, so a first panel that's 2° out of plumb compounds into a visibly leaning wall by the fourth or fifth panel. Fix: take the extra ten minutes to get the first panel dead-level on both face and edge with a spirit level before any adhesive goes down, then recheck level every 3–4 panels rather than waiting until the wall is finished to notice drift.
Mistake 4 — Wrong Adhesive Application
Adhesive applied in a solid sheet, too close to the panel edge, or in the wrong pattern either starves the bond in the middle of the panel or squeezes glue into the click joint, leaving visible stains and a joint that won't seat flush. Fix: apply solvent-free construction adhesive in vertical S-shaped beads roughly 20 cm apart, keeping the beads 5 cm off every edge, and press within the glue's open time — typically 10–15 minutes.
Mistake 5 — Skipping Wet-Area Sealing
The panels themselves absorb 0% water, but an unsealed joint in a shower or around a bathtub still lets water track behind the wall, where it can sit against the wall substrate long after the surface looks dry. Fix: run a neutral-cure silicone bead along every panel-to-tray junction, internal corner and penetration in wet zones — sealing is about the joints, not the panel material. Mistake 6 — Cutting on the Wrong Face
Cutting a decorative-film panel face-down with a hand saw, or face-up with a circular saw, drags the blade's exit direction across the film instead of into the base material, chipping the printed edge exactly where it will be most visible at a socket cutout or corner. Fix: cut decorative face up with hand saws and face down with circular or track saws, so the blade exits into the panel core rather than the film.

Honest Limits: What Good Installation Technique Can't Fix
These six fixes assume the panels themselves arrived in spec. Why do my wall panels look bulged or bowed after installation?
Almost always a missing or too-small expansion gap between panels. As the panels warm up and expand, edge-to-edge installation has nowhere for that movement to go except outward off the wall.
Is a small gap between panels normal, or is it a defect?
Normal, and necessary. A 2–3 mm gap is the correct installation practice, not a flaw — trims and skirting conceal it, and it's what prevents buckling later.
Can I fix panels that have already buckled without removing the whole wall?
Sometimes. If only a few panels near a heat source or window buckled, those specific panels can often be reset with a proper gap without redoing the full wall. Widespread buckling across a whole room usually means a full acclimation-and-gap redo.
How long should panels acclimate before installing?
24 hours minimum in the room where they'll be installed; 48 hours in cold climates or if the panels came straight off a shipping container.
Do these mistakes apply to SPC panels too, or just PVC/carbon crystal?
